Dubai Municipality Volunteers Join CDA’s Weleef Initiative To Serve Elderly
(3 May 2018)

A team of volunteers from Dubai Municipality has joined 'Weleef', an initiative of the Community Development Authority, CDA.

A delegation from the CDA, headed by Khalid Hussain, Head of the Home Care Section in the Elderly Department, visited the municipality in order to conduct an induction workshop for the volunteer team there on the Weleef initiative.

Weleef is a programme that provides care and improves the quality of life of elderly UAE nationals who live alone in Dubai. It runs regular training courses on best practices for professionals who, in turn, offer a range of social services to the elderly at their place of residence, with the objective of assisting them in leading a more meaningful and independent lifestyle by better integrating them into their homes and their community.

Dubai Municipality employees who join the volunteering initiative can work in the same area of their residence or area adjacent to them, and the volunteering work will be for a minimum of one month with one hour in a day every week, and the volunteer can stop at any time by informing the coordinator a week in advance.

Muna Malik, Head of the Volunteer Team at Dubai Municipality, pointed out the municipality's keenness to promote volunteering as a humanitarian and cultural value that embodies the principles of virtue, instils a sense of responsibility among the members of the society, and stimulates the spirit of initiative.

Malik stressed that volunteering in all its forms, public and specialised, is one of the factors that consolidates the elements of well-being, stability and happiness in the society.

"Participating in the registration of a volunteer team in the Weleef programme reflects our continuous efforts to work together with other government agencies to develop government work in the UAE and to document the UAE's outstanding experience.

"In this context, our work as a volunteering team in the Dubai Municipality is an important contribution to the promotion of government excellence in the UAE and is a dissemination of successful experiences and accumulated expertise in a way that combines theory and practice and to reproduce and exchange knowledge between government institutions to serve the objectives of the country and the region in general.

"We are pleased to participate in the care, protection and improvement of the quality of life of older people and help to integrate them into society by volunteering to serve them by providing a range of services of a social nature," Malik added.

"The Weleef programme includes social services through the presence of the elderly, talking with them, finding a link between them and their relatives, friends, society; knowledge and rehabilitation services and self-care by informing the elderly about the latest news and implementing programmes that suit their wishes such as Quran memorisation, reading books, newspapers, recreational and entertainment services such as the participation of the elderly in their hobbies and filling their spare time with recreational activities such as painting, agriculture, carpentry, etc., and following up on the needs of the elderly with health services. Services are provided at or outside the place of residence of the elderly person enrolled in the programme within an approved rehabilitation plan," Hussain said.
