’Rising Talents’ share their journeys to becoming leaders at Global Women’s Forum Dubai
(24 February 2016)

The Rising Talents hub, which is being led by one of the UAE’s leading banks, FGB, spotlights women of under 40 years of age, across all business sectors, who have demonstrated remarkable skills and courage in their professional and personal lives, acting as catalysts for change within their companies and communities. Created by the Women’s Forum for the Economy & Society, the Rising Talents initiative is built around a strong belief in identifying and nurturing women’s talent for the future of global business and society.

The session explored a wide range of topics, including the importance of role models, challenges, failures and self-doubt, breaking the glass ceiling, the importance of mentoring and pushing boundaries for future generations of women aspiring to progress and succeed in the business world and society. The session also featured a video showcasing the nature of the Rising Talents program with short excerpt videos from other Rising Talents members throughout the world.

Raha Moharrak, Everest Summiteer, discussed her views on the importance of acknowledging failure and learning from it. She said: “Failing really teaches you the meaning of perseverance. Accepting failure makes you a stronger person in all aspects of life. It did not come easy when I wanted to climb Everest. With passion and conviction and belief in yourself – you will end up where you want to be.”

On being a leader and role model to future generations with reference to her experience in climbing Mount Everest, she added: “I accidentally became a role model; I live a humble life but filled with passion and conviction. I’m proud to leave a legacy to the next generation and change young people’s perspectives of themselves.”

Sarah Al Agroobi an award-winning visual artist, on discussing her views on failure, said: “In terms of failure, I was never afraid of failure as I never saw it as a bad thing, just a learning curve.” She also spoke about generational differences and how females her age are pushing boundaries. She added: “Technology and social media has moved us ahead. We have been able to access different cultures, religions and philosophy from around the world.  There are role models all around us, even in my generation and age group.”

Hind Abdul Hamied Seddiqi, Chief Marketing Officer of Seddiqi Holding, spoke about her successes and accomplishments throughout her career. On addressing the topics of the session, she said: “In every phase in my life, I had a different role model to spark an interest - each of whom helped and encouraged me forward. You also have to believe in yourself.” She added: “Ladies have paved the way; we need to have each other’s back and encourage one another.”

Iman Ben Chaibah, Founder of @SailPublishing, discussed her views on the ‘glass ceiling’. She said: “If we recognise the glass ceiling exists, that is the definition of a glass ceiling. We need to encourage smart girls. When we look at scientists, we expect them to be boys. For example, if we look at the Mars Mission, the majority are women. Women need to start challenging in every way possible.”

On the discussion of leadership and establishing her own business Iman Ben Chaibah also discussed her passion of how to lead others but also the ability to rely on others and empower them to lead.

The Rising Talents initiative at Global Women’s Forum Dubai recognises seven talented women from the GCC region. These women will also become members of the international Women’s Forum Rising Talents Network, which currently features over 160 women, representing some 50 countries.

The Rising Talents members also met with Her Excellency Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, President of the Republic of Mauritius in an inspirational  pre-program workshop to facilitate and discuss the rising leaders career paths and participation in the event.

Featuring 100 speakers and international delegates, Global Women’s Forum Dubai is bringing together leaders from around the world – women and men – with the aim of considering new perspectives for today and tomorrow; creating a powerful, global network capable of boosting the influence of women throughout the world; conceiving innovative and concrete action plans to encourage women’s contribution to society; and promoting diversity in the business world.
