’UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good’ live competitions set to begin in Dubai on Friday

The Judging Committee for the award will evaluate the live performances to announce the winners on Saturday 6 February. The public have been offered free entry to the award event.

The UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good is the largest award of its kind, offering a total prize money of AED 4.67 million (US$ 1 million for the International Competition winner, and AED 1 million for the National Competition winner).

Saif Al Aleeli, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Museum of the Future Foundation and Coordinator General of the UAE AI & Robotics Award for Good, said preparations have been made for the semi-final and final round of the competition at the International and National levels of the award featuring participants from all parts of the world, including the UAE, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and Spain. 

He said the event will be an opportunity for government entities and private companies as well as students to witness live demonstrations of the latest technological advances in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics. The award in its first edition has generated huge interest as a platform to exchange experiences and share knowledge, and has drawn global attention to the UAE as an innovation and technology hub, Al Aleeli added.

The Judging Committee will choose the best projects capable of offering services in three main categories: education, health and social services.  The Committee includes several prominent international experts such as Justine Cassell, Associate Vice-Provost for Technology Strategy and Impact at Carnegie Mellon University; David Peters, Chief Executive Officer, Universal Robotics; Kim Jong-Hwan, Chair Professor at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST); Stuart Russell, Professor at University of California, Berkeley; Yang Guang-Zhong, Director of The Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery and Deputy Chairman, Institute of Global Health Innovation, Imperial College London; and Alex Wyatt, founder of August Robotics, a recent start-up focused on integrating people-friendly robotics into day-to-day life and member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on Artificial Intelligence and Robotics. 

Other prominent experts in the panel include Eesa Bastaki, President of University of Dubai; Abdulla Ismail, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Assistant to the President for Corporate Outreach, Rochester Institute of Technology Dubai; Paolo Dario, Director of The BioRobotics Institute Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna Pisa; and Ana Paiva, Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon.

The Judging Committee also includes Saeed K. Al Dhaheri, Professor at UAE University; Khalifa H. Harib, Associate Professor at United Arab Emirates University; Nabil Bastaki, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, United Arab Emirates University; Imad Elhajj, Associate Professor at American University of Beirut; Mohamed Al Marzooqi, Director of Training in Etisalat Academy, UAE; and Sabri Al Azazi, Senior Advisor for IT and Technology at the General Management Office of the Abu Dhabi Municipality.

The international speakers who will address the event include Dennis Hong, a Professor and Founding Director of RoMeLa (Robotics & Mechanisms Laboratory) of the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department at UCLA. Other speakers include David Lang, co-founder of OpenROV, a community of ocean lovers who build underwater robots; Federico Pistono, a social entrepreneur, computer scientist, award-winning journalist, author and public speaker.

Innovative projects from the UAE
The Smart Guidance System for the Blind, a project from the UAE, will present its capability to independently assist the blind in avoiding obstacles, identifying places or objects and navigating from one place to another. It can detect obstacles in the blind’s direction within a distance of up to five metres, and gently guide the blind around the obstacles.

The Healthy Robotics team from the UAE will display a novel compact robotic manipulator that has the ability to accurately and conveniently manipulate and to firmly “lock” in place special purpose surgical tools necessary for minimally invasive therapy.

The CoiCAM team from the UAE will present its Spherical Capsule for Endoscopic Applications which has the ability to overcome the limitations of the current endoscopic capsules, providing a better, safer, and a more comfortable method of endoscopy while having a full visualizing field and controllable motion.  This project aims to ease the process of diagnosis of colon cancer.

The CVD Helper team from the UAE will showcase a device for people affected by colour vision deficiency. The device that is worn on the hand in the form of a bracelet is capable of identifying the colour and names objects when touched.
