DEWA becomes first government organisation to offer Social Return on Investment (SROI) training courses to employees
(7 March 2016)

The course was organised in cooperation with the Institute of Leadership Management (ILM), working under the umbrella of Social Value UK, and Social Value International. DEWA is the first organisation in the UAE to organise such a course. The training course took place in February at DEWA’s Sustainable Building and was mediated by Jeremy Nicholls, CEO of Social Value UK and Social Value International.

“Our cooperation with ILM supports the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to focus on staff development, as our employees are essential to the growth of Dubai fuel the on-going development of this city. We continuously work to provide amenities and environments to enhance the happiness of employees, as they are the essence of DEWA and at the core of everything we achieve. Our commitment to our employees is steadfast because they are the catalyst of our success, and we look forward to enhancing creativity and cooperating in excellence to achieve our strategic plans and goals,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“This training course prepares participants, and introduces them to the concept and approach of Social Return on Investment (SROI), a tool for measuring the total value generated for every dirham invested in a project, and the return on investment from a sustainability perspective. This reflects DEWA’s ongoing commitment to learning about the latest training courses, to improve the abilities of its employees,” said Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Business Development at DEWA.

“More and more people are realising the need to manage and improve social and environmental performance. We are proud to see that DEWA, as a government organisation, has the initiative to use SROI in the UAE,” said Jeremy Nicholls.

Representatives from a host of divisions within DEWA were introduced to the principles and the methodology involved with SROI, about evaluating the effectiveness of initiatives, and making decisions. The training course also highlighted the importance of releasing how much of an environmental, social, and economic impact the company’s actions can have on stakeholders, in addition to using qualitative data to develop, and quantify this impact, and assess the social value of the economy.
