There are approximately 32,000 golf courses worldwide and 50 million people play golf throughout the world. There are more than 7,000 golf courses and 4.2 million registered golfers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Europe has more than 6,000 golf courses and roughly 4 million registered golfers. The Middle East region has 25 grass golf courses, in addition to many sand courses. Of the existing 25 courses, 13 are located in the UAE. Dubai alone hosts seven grass courses. Saudi Arabia, with five courses and approximately 3,000 golfers, is the second most relevant regional market player.There are nearly 13,000 registered golfers in the Middle East. Of that more than half (nearly 6,500) are in the UAE, mainly in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. In the Middle East region, one in 3,700 is a registered golfer. In Europe, one out of every 150 citizens is a golfer. On an 18-hole course in the UAE, 48,200 rounds are played per year, far more than in other countries in the region (nearly 39,700). Annual revenues at golf courses in the UAE average approximately euro 5.9million, four times more than the second best performer, Portugal. 18-hole golf courses in the Middle East have significantly higher utilization (62 per cent) than courses in other regions. Eastern European courses are the least utilized, below 20per cent on average.Courses in the Middle East employ significantly more staff than in other regions: close to 250 people on average, with close to 100 people in the food and beverage department. The average staffing of golf courses is the lowest in Northern Europe (about 12 people). It may be noted here that many golf courses in the Northern Europe receive help from members on a voluntary basis.The average construction cost of an 18-hole course varies widely, with the lowest recorded in Eastern Europe, at an average cost of 1.25million euros to the most expensive in the Middle East, costing on average 6.14 million euros.Clubs in the Middle East are the most optimistic about their future business prospects, with not one expecting average or poor performance.
