 New
NewThere’s excitement in the air, oh yes, oh yes! The thermometer is already showing temperatures that would be better suited to a sauna but all that really means is that the people of Dubai have to try harder. They have to make an effort to keep energy levels up; to provide enough entertainment to keep us all from throwing in our beach towels (too hot for that) and flying home.
The fun starts tonight with a pool party. But this ain’t no ordinary pool party. This is a dive-in cinema – the chance to watch a movie in the comfort of an inflatable pool chair. Yes, really! Tonight they’re showing Twilight and seeing as I devoured all four books in the space of a month and have only seen the movie… ooooh, about 300 times, I can’t wait!
This event, being hosted by the Montgomerie Dubai Golf Club (behind the Greens) starts tonight but will be happening every Thursday night throughout the summer… well… until it gets too hot even for the swimming pool. There will be two movies a night, one at 7 for the kids, and one at 9 for the grown-ups (45 AED pp). I reckon everyone’s inner child will be out to play though – what adult can resist the urge to dunk another right in the middle of an emotional scene, when all eyes are focused on the screen, ready for that long-awaited kiss – SPLASH – MAN DOWN! Don’t take your hot dogs in the water please, we don’t all want to be swimming in ketchup.
So what else is Dubai doing to lure us outside? Well, there’s a free event down at the Irish Village tomorrow – the SUZUKI WAY OF LIFE – 2nd ANNUAL PARTY to be precise. (Don’t remember the first one, but then, I’m not really a bike fan). Garhoud will be swimming, the DJs will be spinning and crazy people will be sweating a lot, as they race about in biking competitions from 11am to 9pm. There’s live music too, and the IV always put on a good show… if the annual beer festival is anything to go by, held in the midst of summer’s harshest weather, I’m sure it will be packed. The press release says there’s a FREE airbrush for winners of competitions, too. I’m not entirely sure what that means. Some sort of brush for painting bikes? Or does every woman get a magazine style makeover with a perfected version of herself slapped on the front of a biker’s magazine. Back in the UK the thought of such a thing would have got the punters flocking. Conservative Dubai however… well, what was I saying about having to try harder?
Either way it’s all in aid of fundraising for the Sharjah Autism Centre so get off your couch and sweat in the name of something good. Maybe I’ll see you there (maybe not).
Can’t stand the heat? Could be an idea to get into a kitchen – so say bluebanana.com who this week served me up a tempting offer in my inbox – a Verre Master class, no less! You know… Gordon Ramsey’s restaurant? This awesome idea gets wannabe cooks like me into the world of culinary creations and the art of wine-pairing, courtesy of Verre's award-winning Sommelier, Luca Gagliardi. Once you’ve cooked it all up, you'll get to sample it and take home a personal Verre recipe pack and exclusive Verre apron. Whit-whoo. The experience comes in at a rather pricey 950 AED but as soon as I read about it, I thought “me me me!” And seriously, how much does a brunch cost these days? Some of them are 500 AED and the only thing you get to take home is a headache.
This will be my third summer in the city and although Dubai’s a little quieter than last year, a load of my friends are leaving and I’m kind of over those boozy weekends and hangovers, it’s good to know that there are people out there still plotting to make it special.
Now bring on Twilight in the pool – do you think I should make a vampire cloak from a bin liner or is that going a little too far?
